How ShooChat Works

1

Create a room

Tap "Create Private Room" to generate a unique 6-character code. Share it with anyone you want to chat with.

2

Connect directly

Your browsers connect directly to each other using WebRTC. No middleman. No messages pass through any server.

3

Chat with confidence

Every message is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before it leaves your device. Verify your connection with the safety emoji fingerprint.

4

Close and forget

When you close the tab, everything disappears. Messages live only in memory — not in a database, not in local storage, not anywhere.

What Makes ShooChat Non-Traceable?

ShooChat uses a zero-trace architecture— messages exist only in your browser's volatile memory (RAM). Unlike server-based apps, there is no database write, no local storage entry, and no cookie ever created. When you close the tab, the cryptographic keys and all message content are physically released back to the OS. There is no record to subpoena, no backup to breach, and nothing for ShooChat to hand over — because it never existed on a server in the first place.

No database

Zero writes, ever

No local storage

RAM only — closes clean

No server content

P2P — we never see it

Built for Privacy

ShooChat was designed from the ground up so that nobody — not even us — can read your messages.

End-to-End Encryption

ECDH key exchange generates a unique shared secret per session. Messages are encrypted with AES-256-GCM — the same standard used by governments and banks.

Peer-to-Peer via WebRTC

Messages travel directly between browsers via WebRTC. The only server interaction is a brief handshake to find each other — after that, it's just you and your peer.

Ephemeral by Design

No databases. No cookies. No local storage. Messages exist only in your browser's RAM. Close the tab and the data is physically gone from the device.

Safety Verification

After connecting, both users see the same emoji fingerprint derived from the shared secret. Compare them to verify nobody is intercepting your chat.

Everything You Need, Nothing You Don't

A full-featured chat experience — entirely in your browser, with zero data stored.

Encrypted File Sharing

Send images, videos, audio, and documents up to 50 MB. Files are AES-256 encrypted and sent peer-to-peer.

Full-Screen Media Preview

Preview images and videos full-screen before sending. Tap any media in chat to view it in a lightbox.

Self-Destructing Messages

Set a timer from 10 seconds to 1 hour. Messages auto-delete after the countdown — from both sides.

👍

Emoji Reactions

React to any message with emoji. Quick-react with one tap, or pick from the full emoji set.

Edit & Delete Messages

Made a typo? Edit your message. Changed your mind? Delete it — removed from both sides instantly.

Reply & Pin

Reply to specific messages for context. Pin important messages so they don’t get lost in the conversation.

Group Chat

Create a group room and invite multiple peers. Everyone connects through the host with encrypted channels.

Meet with a Secret Code

Skip the link sharing. Agree on a word, both type it, and you’re connected. Works as a passphrase too.

Privacy Screen

Chat auto-blurs when you switch tabs. Optionally require your passphrase to view it again.

✏️

Typing & Read Indicators

See when your peer is typing and when they’ve read your message — real-time, encrypted.

😊

Emoticon Auto-Conversion

Type :) or <3 and they’re converted to emoji automatically. Old-school shortcuts, modern output.

Passphrase Protection

Lock your room with a passphrase. Both sides verify it cryptographically — wrong passphrase, no access.

Voice Messages

Record and send short audio clips directly in chat. Mic button in the toolbar — tap to record, release to send. Encrypted like every other message.

Encrypted Video & Audio Calls

Start a private encrypted video or audio call directly in 1-on-1 chats. WebRTC SRTP encryption — peer-to-peer, no call servers, mute and camera toggle included.

Screen Sharing

Share your screen during a 1-on-1 call. Fully encrypted peer-to-peer — nothing passes through a server. No download, no plugin, just a browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to create an account to use ShooChat?+

No. ShooChat has no accounts, no sign-ups, and no user data collection. Just open shoochat.com and start chatting privately — no email, no phone number required.

Can ShooChat read my messages?+

No. Messages are encrypted with AES-256-GCM in your browser before being sent peer-to-peer via WebRTC. ShooChat never sees, stores, or processes the content of your conversations.

What happens when I close the tab?+

Everything is permanently gone. Messages exist only in your browser's memory (RAM). Closing the tab or refreshing the page erases all data. There's no database, no local storage, no cookies — nothing to recover.

How is ShooChat different from WhatsApp or Signal?+

ShooChat stores absolutely nothing — no message history, no contact list, no phone number, no account. It's designed for truly ephemeral conversations with zero persistence. Messages travel directly between browsers.

Is ShooChat free?+

Yes, ShooChat is completely free with no ads. It runs peer-to-peer with no backend servers, so there are no infrastructure costs to pass on.

Do both people need to be online at the same time?+

Yes. Since messages aren't stored anywhere, both participants must be connected simultaneously. This is by design — it means there's no server ever holding your messages.

What is the room passphrase?+

The passphrase is an optional extra layer of security. When set, both users must enter the exact same passphrase to connect. It's verified cryptographically using HMAC-SHA256 — if the passphrases don't match, the connection is refused.

Can I send files through ShooChat?+

Yes. ShooChat supports encrypted file sharing up to 50 MB. Files are split into chunks, encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and sent directly to your peer. You get a full-screen preview before sending, and images and videos can be viewed in a lightbox after receiving.

Can messages self-destruct?+

Yes. Set a timer (10 seconds to 1 hour) and your messages will automatically delete from both sides when the timer expires. The countdown starts as soon as the message is sent.

Does ShooChat support group chat?+

Yes. Create a group room and share the code with multiple people. Group chat uses a star topology where the host relays encrypted messages. Note: group chat is not fully end-to-end since messages pass through the host.

What is the blur/privacy screen feature?+

When enabled in Settings, ShooChat automatically blurs the entire chat when you switch to another tab or app. You can optionally require your room passphrase to unblur it, adding an extra layer of protection if someone else picks up your device.

Can I edit or delete sent messages?+

Yes. Tap any message you sent to edit or delete it. Changes are reflected on both sides in real-time. Deleted messages are removed from your peer's screen instantly.

What is the "Meet with a secret code" feature?+

It lets two people connect without sharing a link through another app. Both agree on a secret word beforehand (in person, on a call, etc.), then each types it on ShooChat. The first person to arrive waits, the second connects automatically. The code also acts as a passphrase to prevent strangers with the same code from joining.

Does ShooChat support video calls?+

Yes. ShooChat supports encrypted 1-on-1 video and audio calls. Tap the phone or video icon in the chat header to start a call. Everything is peer-to-peer over WebRTC SRTP — no call servers, no recordings, fully encrypted. Includes mute, camera toggle, and an in-call overlay with picture-in-picture local video.

Can I share my screen on ShooChat?+

Yes. During a 1-on-1 call you can share your screen. It uses the same WebRTC peer-to-peer channel as video — nothing passes through a server, no plugin or app download required. Just a modern browser.

Can I send voice messages on ShooChat?+

Yes. Tap the microphone button in the message toolbar to record a voice clip and send it. Voice messages are encrypted with AES-256-GCM and transferred peer-to-peer just like files. Your peer gets a native audio player inline in the chat bubble.

How is ShooChat different from Telegram?+

Telegram stores your message history on its servers by default. ShooChat stores nothing — messages exist only in your browser's RAM while the tab is open. ShooChat also requires no account, no phone number, and no app install. Telegram's "secret chats" are device-to-device, but you still need an account tied to a phone number. ShooChat is fully anonymous by design.

Does ShooChat have a mobile app?+

ShooChat works in any mobile browser and can be installed as a PWA (Progressive Web App) from your browser's menu — no App Store or Play Store required. This keeps it anonymous: no developer identity, no store policy, no traceable install. Add it to your home screen for a full-screen app experience.
